On 7th July 2011 Google decided to remove over 11 million websites containing the second level domain names co.cc because they believe that the sites were creating way to more spam for search engine results.

CO.CC is a 2nd level domain registrar company which provides free domains for web users over the world along with the possibility for them to register bulk domains. The users can even register 2 co.nr domains for free and 100 domains for 10$ and up to 15000 domains for $1k. Since the service was released, over 11,408,205 domains were registered by almost 6 million users.

Taking the fact that the service is free, most people who registered domains at co.cc abused the service and spammed the Google search engine. Promptly as always, Google removed the co.nr from it’s search results in order to avoid displaying non-relevant content to it’s users.

Co.cc is independently owned by a Korean domain registrar and over the years a great number of phishing attacks were received from co.cc domain names. Don’t worry about top level domain names such as .cc (Cocos Island) or other top level domains like co.uk co.jp etc they are safe.
